Bev Le ChanceTeen dating violence is far more common than most adults are aware. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 9.4 percent of high school students report being hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend and about 1 in 5 women and nearly 1 in 7 men who ever experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age. Involvement in an unhealthy relationship can begin at a young age and may last a lifetime. That’s why, early on, learning about the elements of a healthy relationship is so important. Remember the foundation upon which healthy relationships are built is respect, for yourself and your partner.
