Tuesday, December 1 was #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. Charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. The WCA participated this year and we made our Capital Campaign the focus.

We launched our Hope Needs Space to Grow Capital Campaign this fall. Studies show that Domestic Violence is a leading cause of homelessness for women and their children. A mother should never choose between staying in an abusive relationship – or putting herself and her children on the street. This is a choice that many in our community face and we have consistent waitlists for our shelter. The launch of this Capital Campaign is intended to alleviate this current reality.

We plan to begin construction as soon as the ground thaws in 2016 and our new shelter is scheduled to have 8 rooms available by Fall of 2016. The impact of this expansion will be exponential in the years to come. The additional rooms give us the ability to provide for up to 48 more families per year. #GivingTuesday was the perfect opportunity for us to help try to raise our remaining funds needed for this shelter.

Stacey King, a local Boise Realtor, participated in #GivingTuesday. She said, “I think it is every man, woman, and child’s basic right to live in a safe and healthy environment. I have seen too many victims suffer at the hands of their abusers and in turn, they are shamed or blamed for the abuse. I fully believe in what the WCA is doing – not just on a practical level, but on a societal and cultural level as well. They are changing the conversation surrounding domestic violence and I think everyone should champion that.”

Donations came in all day, and with it, reasons why people were supporting the expansion of our services. We were continually humbled.

We are thrilled to announce that your generosity on Giving Tuesday has helped bring our total funds to $1,362,486 for Hope Needs Space to Grow. We are just shy of our $1.4 need for this Capital Campaign. Our hope is to reach this goal by the end of the year.

If you would like to be a part of helping us to end the waitlist and build a second shelter building for those moms and children leaving abusive relationships please donate here. We are so grateful for our community’s support on Giving Tuesday and each individual’s support for Hope Needs Space to Grow.
